The main goal of Periodontology is to preserve periodontal health, this is, the health of tissues supporting the teeth (gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and root cement) and involving dental implants (gingiva and peri-implant bone). When these supporting tissues are affected, whether due to infection, trauma, or to individual susceptibility coupled with other systemic diseases such as diabetes, the teeth may be at risk. They eventually begin to acquire some mobility and, ultimately, can be lost. When dealing with acute gingival infections, there may be intense or moderate pain, especially when chewing. However, most periodontal diseases are silent, that is, they do not present symptoms or signs except when they are already in a more advanced state and the loss of support is already so severe that dental mobility is present. It is therefore very important to have a careful clinical examination, complemented by detailed radiographic images, even in routine appointments, for the early detection of any type of periodontal affection.
The clinical and radiological periodontal examinations allow for the establishment of a periodontal diagnosis. With this, the dentist can develop an adequate treatment plan for controlling the main periodontal diseases - gingivitis and periodontitis - and peri-implant diseases (peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis).
From a periodontological point of view, in addition to the treatment of active diseases, the esthetic component is also relevant, as there is a possibility of correction of disharmony of the pink aesthetics (gingiva) with periodontal plastic surgeries.
Dr. David Martins, specialist in periodontology by the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Lisbon, with an exclusive practice in implantology and periodontology, is especially dedicated to the prevention and treatment of all types of periodontal and peri-implant problems.
